What to see in Ragusa Ibla, baroque city

1 – Chiesa delle Santissime Anime del Purgatorio

A stone’s throw from the tourist information center you will first see the Church of the Most Holy Souls of Purgatory. This church is one of the few to survive the earthquake of 1693. The facade is in Baroque style, but the true beauty of this place of worship is the marble interior and the large painting Souls of Purgatory (dating back to 1800) by Francesco Manno.

2 – Palazzo della Cancelleria

Continuing along Via delle Scale, which is not called that by chance, you will arrive in front of the Palazzo della Cancelleria. It is one of the 18 monuments of Ragusa, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is located in the oldest part of the city and is built in a refined baroque style. Passing under the arch to the left of the building you can admire the blue bell tower of Santa Maria dell’Itria in the distance.

3 – Chiesa di Santa Maria delle scale

Continuing along the hairpin bends of Corso Mazzini, which connects Ibla to Ragusa Superiore, you will arrive in front of the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale. This place of worship is located in such a panoramic place that it is an unmissable stop on this itinerary in Ragusa. From the square in front of the church you can admire the historic center of the city and the dome of the Cathedral of S. Giorgio

4 – Chiesa di Santa Maria Dell’Itria

Among the most beautiful places in all of Ragusa, the blue dome of the church of Santa Maria dell’Itria undoubtedly stands out. Under the cobalt blue dome is an octagonal drum with eight terracotta panels decorated with colorful designs. The church is located in the old Jewish quarter of the city and, following the signs to the panoramic point, you can reach a place that will make you feel as if you are touching the dome with your finger.

5 – Duomo di San Giorgio

Continuing along Via Duomo, you will pass right alongside the church of San Giorgio, until you find us in the highest part of the main square and the entrance to the Duomo preceded by a long staircase. Attention: to enter you must follow the signs and go to the side entrances of the church.
