What to see at Modica

1 – Duomo di San Giorgio

It is considered one of the most impressive baroque places of worship in all of Sicily and, perhaps, it could also be. The 250 steps preceding the entrance unquestionably help to make it even more majestic, but its 62 meters of height certainly do not make it go unnoticed. The facade is a warm golden color, typical of the Sicilian baroque style, and the monument has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

2 – Pizzo Belvedere

Both Modica Alta and Modica Bassa are full of beauties contained even in the simplest things. But I will never tire of saying that the true essence of Modica are the views. Going down any staircase that flanks the Cathedral of San Giorgio, you will reach Pizzo Belvedere: a panoramic terrace overlooking the roofs of Modica Alta, but which will also allow you to see Modica Bassa.

3 – Castello dei Conti di Modica

Perched atop a rocky spur, the Castello dei Conti dominates the city. It is a medieval castle that offers an overview of the history of medieval Modica before the earth shook and destroyed much of it in 1693. It can be reached on foot, but before venturing up the hill, I recommend you check the opening hours on this site.

4 – Casa Natale di Salvatore Quasimodo

Of Sicilian origins, the writer Salvatore Quasimodo was born in Modica. One thing to do in Modica for fans of the poet is to visit his birthplace: during the visit you will be able to admire the original furniture and an evocative vintage typewriter. What makes the visit even more immersive is the voice of the poet who recites some of his verses. I suggest you visit the official website to discover updated times and prices.

5 – the chocolate museum

This is not just any chocolate museum, but the Modica chocolate museum. It is important to understand why the chocolate you will eat here is very different than classic chocolate. This is cold processed to ensure that the sugar remains grainy. This chocolate does not melt in your mouth, but crumbles. Here’s the real difference! It is also possible to find it in different variations, such as cinnamon, chilli or even wine. Inside the Chocolate Museum you can discover the origin of Modica chocolate, enjoy some free tastings and admire a large chocolate sculpture approximately 9 meters high. As they say: “Look, but don’t lick!” Oh no?? In the dedicated laboratory you can also watch its preparation. The cost of the ticket is €3, but consider whether it is worth visiting for you because it takes a very short time to visit. Visit the municipality website for more information
